Coleman and Skinner
MEET COLEMAN AND SKINNER
Mary Ann Coleman and Eleanor Skinner are the sisters Dr. John Garvin, former head of the Department of Neurology at UIC.
WHY THEY GAVE
“On many occasions, I have met people who have either been patients or former trainees of my brother John,” said Coleman, a 1935 U of I graduate. “It has been so wonderful to hear what a committed and dedicated teacher and doctor John has been throughout his career at UIC.”
HOW THEY GAVE
To honor their brother, the sisters set up a named professorship. This professorship celebrates Garvin’s contributions to building a strong, clinically-based department that includes innovative centers for treating strokes and epilepsy and a premier training program for neurology residents. The gift will be used to recruit junior faculty members and support their research.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
For Garvin, the professorship had both personal and professional significance. “I am very honored that my sisters have made this possible,” said Garvin.
