Gifts in Action - Ashley Lloren

MEET ASHLEY LLOREN

Attending college would have been difficult if Ashley Lloren hadn’t received scholarships. Fortunately, he received a James Newton Matthews Scholarship, which allowed him time to focus on his coursework; he attended graduate school through a fellowship in the College of Engineering with plans to obtain his Ph.D. “I’m very glad that I did attend the U of I, because I honestly don’t think I would have had an equally beneficial experience anywhere else,” said Llorens.

The scholarship allowed him to gain a new perspective through participating in the Scholarship Selection Committee. He also benefited greatly from his sponsors in knowing them and learning of their experiences. The Matthews Scholarship provides a sponsor for each one of its recipients. While working on his master's thesis, Ashley limited his student activities to the Society of Black Engineers and UC-Hip Hop Congress.
