MEET ALEXANDRA JANEZIC

A student at the University of Illinois at Springfield, Alexandria Janezic was an Avery Brundage Scholarship winner and received $2,000 for the 2006-2007 academic year. Janezic is from Lake Barrington, Illinois, and enrolled at UIS in fall 2005. At UIS she was a Capital Scholars honor student majoring in Psychology, a member of the women's volleyball team and was named to the dean’s list. While in high school, she was a member of the National Honor Society, was named to the honor roll all eight semesters and helped lead the girls’ volleyball team to two consecutive Class AA State runner-up finishes.

AVERY BRUNDAGE SCHOLARSHIPS

Avery Brundage Scholarships are awarded to U of I students who excel in both academics and athletics. Brundage scholarship recipients are selected by a committee representing the faculties and student bodies of the three U of I campuses. Students chosen must engage in athletics for personal development, not as preparation for professional sports; must be working toward bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees at the U of I; and must be in the upper 25 percent of their undergraduate class or in good academic standing in their graduate program.

The scholarships were established in 1974 by an endowment from Avery Brundage, University of Illinois alumnus and former president of the International and U.S. Olympic committees. Since 1974, 714 scholarships have been awarded, totaling $804,500.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

“Ali’s commitment on the volleyball court also shines through with her commitment in the classroom,” said Joseph Fisher, UIS head volleyball coach. “We are pleased to have such a well-rounded student-athlete in our program.”
